A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

You've been told to never buy a puppy if you can't see the mother and where she lives.

Yet, when you ask a breeder to see the mother you are often told that they don't allow people in these areas for various reasons, such as "their insurance doesn't allow it", or "they need to protect their dogs from germs that you could bring in".

Well, now you can see what the breeders don't want you to see!!

Through the Freedom of Information Act, Iowa Friends of Companion Animals has received THOUSANDS of pictures from USDA inspection reports of Iowa breeding facalities.

This is just a start. We have MANY MANY more pictures to get up on the site. It's a LOT of work, but we are working around the clock to get this done.

Check out the pictures. Don't like what you see? Help to make a difference. Subscribe to Iowa VCA emails (on the left side of this page under the "Contact Us" section).

Why the number 23?

To bring attention to the approximately 23,000 adult breeding dogs in Iowa puppy mills. With every dollar, you will be helping dogs. We have no paid staff so every dollar goes directly to prevention efforts:
  • Education programs for law enforcement personnel to ensure they have the tools they need to investigate and prosecute potential animal abuse and neglect in commercial dog-breeding facilities
  • Education programs for students to teach them responsible dog-ownership
  • Public-awareness campaigns geared for the general public.

Puppy Mill Awareness Info to Share
The Financial & Emotional Impacts of Owning a Puppy Mill Puppy

The heath issues of dogs born in puppy mills often don't show up until the dog is older, or more likely, until the family loves the pup so much that they will do anything within their power to make it well, which can run into thousands of dollars very quickly.

This is the story of a little Yorkie who had the cards stacked against her on the day she was born. It shares with you the deep love and the heartaches of having a puppy mill puppy.

The Puppy Mill / Pet Store Connection

Moving video explaining the connection between pet stores and puppy mills. Bottom line? Don't buy a puppy from a pet store.
